Teaching others about leading a healthy lifestyle and motivating them to achieve their goals can be one of the most rewarding challenges you can undertake. Whether you intend on making fitness your full time career, or just a part-time job, there are several steps you will need to take to ensure your success, as well as the success of your students!
1. First you’ll need to take a course in CPR and First Aid in person, as online versions are not acceptable. Contact the local American Red Cross or American Heart Association for times and dates these courses are offered, or look for our in-club “Always Prepared” CPR and First Aid trainings offered by Tony Jeffries. We offer them about 4 times per year.
2. Determine if you want to work one on one with clients, or in a group training situation and then get certified! Many certifications for Personal Trainers and Group Fitness instructors are available and some even offer prepatory courses and workshops prior to the exam. Conveniently, Monmouth Fitness club will be hosting an Aerobics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA) group fitness prep workshop and primary certification on Sunday April 11th from 9am to 6pm. Visit AFAA.com for more information and to register for this event. ($299 plus study materials) This primary group fitness certification acts as a encompassing ”umbrella” and qualifies new instructors to teach basic formats like aerobics, bootcamps, and strength training classes. Underneath the “umbrella”, instructors can then begin to add more training in specific formats like indoor cycling, yoga, pilates, kickboxing, and even water aerobics.
3. Find out what you want to teach, find a mentor, and then start practicing! The best way to learn to teach group fitness is to take as many different kinds of classes that you can to figure out what you enjoy doing. Once you narrow your focus down to one or two formats at most, then ask the instructor if they might be willing to mentor you. Our Fitness Director, Nichole Taylor, has mentored many new instructors over the years and is always willing to share teaching skills and knowledge. If you are interested in teaching group fitness, becoming a personal trainer, or just want to ask some questions please feel free to email her: nichole@monmouthfit.com

Monmouth Fitness Club now offers Tai Chi on Tuesday evenings @ 7:30pm. Bobby Strutz, a certified Personal Trainer and Tai Chi instructor, will be leading the class each week. If you are unfamiliar, Tai Chi is an ancient exercise developed over hundreds of years and uses isometric motions to develop strength throughout the lower body and core. People of any age and experience level can find benefits to their strength and balance through the motions of Tai Chi. The level of difficulty is modified by the person who is practicing, which means that people of differing levels of experience can practice together without problem. Tai Chi also provides a level of peace and mental stillness that is similar to seated meditation, and because of this many people choose to practice for that reason alone. In a nutshell, Tai Chi is a blend of exercise, meditation, and artistic movement that has become the exercise of choice for millions, if not billions of people the world wide. Why not try it for yourself?
We’re revamping our Group Fitness schedule for 2010. Look for new names for your old favorite formats, and new times or new instructors for new formats. Be sure to stay up to date on all of the changes by checking out our Google calendar plug-in right here on our website. With the addition of these four we can now accomdate 18 members in each and every cycling class. If you haven’t tried it yet, this format is a great interval cardio workout that can be customized to your own level of fitness just by how much resistance YOU put on your bike. Be sure to arrive 5-10 minutes before class to get a bike and tell your instructor if you need help with adjusting your bike to fit you. Bring a water bottle (or two!) with you, towels are provided.
Please join us for a free seminar about eating healthy, a great way to stay focused during the holiday season. We’ll be hosting Dawn Gray, a registered dietician from the Salem Hospital system, on Wednesday night December 2nd @ 7:30pm. This talk is free and open to the public as well as members of Monmouth Fitness Club.
We’ll be offering a new Pilates class every Wednesday night in December. Join Julie, your instructor, at 6:30pm. Pilates replaces Circuit Training, previously offered in this time spot.
Pilates is a mat workout designed to work the muscles of your core, or “powerhouse” of the body. You’ll incorporate moves to work the abdominals, lower back, inner/outer thighs, glutes, and hamstrings. Suitable for all ages and fitness levels, this class will be taught with modifications and enhancements so that every member can reap the benefits of strengthening their core by going at their own pace.
